The Game!
The Backdrop!
What if a racing game, and an endless runner merged? That's Time Rider! Fully immersed in Virtual Reality, dodging interfering obstructions, and in the same occasion also collecting bonuses to power up your character! Featuring anthropomorphic sloths (Yeah, sloths), established on a bike (Do sloths even have hands to control the bikes? I don't think so, but anything is possible in Time Rider, ain't it?), travel through different worlds while you morph your way through time portals! Diverse world, dynamic game-play, it's just everything you needed! Virtual Reality has never been less scary (unless you play *name of stupid game* in VR).
The Scope!
Time rider is a virtual reality game for Google Cardboard on android. Since this game needs to run on mid-range android phones, we are using a greatly reduced poly-count. This may seem like a disadvantage, but we're embracing the style!
Game Mechanics, Simplified!
Many VR experiences utilise complex interactions, and have novel control schemes. While they are interesting, we find them disorienting, and they require a steep learning curve. If we do this right, Time Rider should be an easy game for anyone to pick up and play. As such Time Rider is focused on maintaining a very calm and easy interface:
- The player is sitting down in a chair (no 360 turning of the player's body)*
- The player has no separate controller (no buttons or anything like that)
- There will be as little menus and home-screens as possible as menu interaction is hard
-- There is an automatic multiplayer mode in the game (no menus or lobbies)
- The player has a fixed visual element anchoring them to the environment.
-- That way they can always tell which way is forward. (the bike)
- Reading long text in VR is tiring, so no excessive reading
- Acceleration and tilt is bad, so levels should remain as flat as possible
- VR is frustrating enough, as such the gameplay will be uninterrupted to prevent frustration.
-- No dying
-- No restarting
-- No failing
-- Anyone who is willing to sit through the game complete it
-- This does not rule out achievements for replay ability:
--- You can complete the game in a better fashion a second time
Background:
Time Rider is akin to a cross between a racing game and a VR version of an endless runner: It is a game where you dodge obstacles while collecting bonuses. As the game is very slow, the game features anthropomorphic sloths. This sloth rides a bike through time portals, and each game section consists of a different time periods. Each time period has it’s own visual style and game-play. In the future we might like to add ninja (panther?) antagonists, although their role in the game has not been fleshed out yet...
